Violator
Regular price $29.00 Save $-29.00Before These Crowded Streets
Regular price $48.00 Save $-48.00Before These Crowded Streets is the third studio album by Grammy award-winning rock band, Dave Matthews Band. Originally released in spring of 1998, the album received both critical and commercial success. Dethroning the Titanic soundtrack, which sat atop the Billboard 200 for 16 consecutive weeks, Before These Crowded Streets was certified triple-platinum and began the band’s impressive streak of six No. 1 albums in a row. The LA Times said: On this album, the band places an even higher premium on musical proficiency. Songs such as “Rapunzel” and “The Stone” are built around vertiginous polyrhythms and serpentine riffs that dart around Matthew’s clenched vocals, yet always manage to lock into an enjoyable groove.
The band continues to play a majority of the songs from this album in their nightly sets while on tour as it’s been a favorite among fans for over two decades. The 25th anniversary edition comes as a standard black 2LP vinyl with an exclusive new booklet featuring rare photos. Lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.
First Impressions of Earth
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00The Strokes First Impressions of Earth on LP
Their prospects dangerously over-inflated by pundits who often hailed their debut as nothing short of rock-messianic, New York City's Strokes got a lesson in cynical rock-press dynamics when their biz-troubled, if similarly toned, 2003 sophomore set was dutifully dismissed as the proverbial sophomore slump. A lesser band might have been chastened by the experience; this one responded with a third album that positively bristles with energetic challenges. Revolving around a loose concept that allows songwriter/frontman Julian Casablancas to adopt a viewpoint that's as detached as it is world-weary and bemused, it's a record that quickly trades the often precious production conceits of its forebears for a muscular confidence that's notable from the infectious, back-to-the-80s opener 'You Only Live Once' to its perfect bookend 'Red Light.'
That often inviting sonic remodeling may come in part from Bangles/Sublime/Sugar Ray producer David Kahne (who replaces previous collaborator Gordon Raphael on all but a handful of cuts), but the band clearly has expansiveness on its mind, from a running length nearly twice its predecessors to such stylistic excursions as the cinematic, back-to-the-future riffing of the single 'Juicebox,' the spare, electro-baroque moodiness of 'Ask Me Anything,' and the dense, surprising prog flirtations of 'Electrocityscape.' 'On the Other Side' finds Casablancas convincingly casting himself as the anti-Bono while crooning 'I hate them, I hate them all, I hate myself for hating them' before chiding humanity as 'seven billion people who've got nothing to say' on the otherwise upbeat closer, 'Red Light.'

Depeche Mode 101
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Roughly 28 years ago, Depeche Mode performed the 101st date of their tour behind Music for the Masses at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on June 18, 1988, a concert which was filmed and recorded for release as the film and album entitled – appropriately enough – 101.
Originally conceived by members of Depeche Mode as a method of clarifying how the group fit into the ‘80s, things changed for 101 when famed documentarian D.B. Pennebaker stepped into the role of director and felt that it was going to be too difficult to cover the topic at hand in a manner which would prove cinematically entertaining. Instead, he switched things up to follow a collective of Depeche Mode fans who'd won a "Be in a Depeche Mode Movie" contest. In turn, 101 was able to spotlight both the devotion of the band's fans and the live Depeche Mode experience.
Unfortunately, those who came into the proceedings looking for a full-fledged concert film may have walked away disappointed by the end result, which in no way showed the band's performance in its entirety, but those folks still ended up with a double-disc live album, one which did an excellent job of sampling the DM discography up to that point. Plus, whether you want to attribute it to the film, the album, or a combination of both, the end result was that Depeche Mode's profile grew so substantial as a result of 101 that their next studio album, 1990's Violator, gave them the first US top-10 album of their career.
Dummy
Regular price $46.00 Save $-46.00The English band who take their name from the nearby to Bristol town of Portishead are rightly credited with fusing electronica and experimental rock into a style that has been tagged trip hop. Utilizing break beats, acid house, soul, funk and jazz the music they create has an ethereal quality with a visceral punch. The combination of Beth Gibbons haunting vocals – she cites Nina Simone, Edith Piaf, Sugarcubes and the Cocteau Twins idiosyncratic singer Liz Fraser as influences – allied to the production and instrumental skills of Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley add up to a remarkable sound. The emphasis on sonic clarity is bolstered by engineer Dave McDonald who worked with the trio on their debut disc Dummy, a gothic and noir collection that would sweep the board at the fourth Mercury Music Prize in 1995 thanks to the spacey jazz melodies and emotional density of singles like "Numb," "Sour Times" and "Glory Box." Dummy has since featured in many a select list of great albums of the 20th century and it has lost none of its appeal in the past 25 years.
Nothing's Shocking
Regular price $29.00 Save $-29.00Jane's Addiction's genre-defying 1988 masterpiece Nothing's Shocking captured the too short-lived quartet at its absolute peak. Combining radically diverse musical elements from art, psychedelic, and classic rock, to hard-core punk and funk and metal, Jane's Addiction was the last great precursor to the alternative revolution of 1991-92. From songs about Ted Bundy ("Ted, Just Admit It") to punk ideology as Eastern philosophy ("Pigs In Zen") to mystic romances ("Summertime Rolls") and early-morning thoughts ("Standing In The Shower...Thinking"), Perry Farrell consistently dissects his subjects through a psychologically-stimulating viewpoint while the extremely talented band made up of guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkin provide the songs with an expansive set of musical color. A must-have for lovers of cutting-edge, influential, and timeless rock, as well as anyone who's loved any band to emerge post-1990.

Meat is Murder [Import]
Regular price $32.00 Save $-32.00The Smiths' eclectic 1985 release finds the band branching out into rockabilly, post-punk and flashes of funk, all while refining the guitar pop of their debut. Produced by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, Meat Is Murder is the band's sole studio album to reach No. 1 on the U.K. charts. "The Headmaster Ritual" and "I Want the One I Can't Have" are fine elaborations on the formula the band introduced on their debut, while "Rusholme Ruffians" is an infectious take on rockabilly. There was no other British group making music quite like this in 1985.

Seventeen Seconds
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Seventeen Seconds is the second studio album by English rock band The Cure, recorded at Morgan Studio and released on 22 April 1980. Seventeen Seconds established the group's gloomy sound that would continue until 1982's Pornography. It is the only Cure album to feature keyboardist Matthieu Hartley. Inspiration was very high for the album, as Robert Smith wrote the lyrics and music for most of the record on just two occasions. Most of the music was composed by Smith in his parents' home, on a Hammond organ with a built-in tape recorder. Interviewed in 2004, producer Mike Hedges does not recall any demo tracks, with the band generally playing the track in the studio before laying down a backing track to which overdubs were added. Two members of The Magazine Spies, bass guitarist Simon Gallup and keyboardist Matthieu Hartley, were added to the band's lineup. Gallup replaced Michael Dempsey, which relieved Smith as he felt Dempsey's basslines were too ornate and that they weren't getting on socially. Hartley's synth work added a new dimension to the band's newly ethereal sound, although Smith and he clashed over complexity (Hartley enjoyed complex chords; Smith wanted single notes).

Pretty Odd
Regular price $29.00 Save $-29.00Panic at the Disco's sophomore album Pretty. Odd (2008) was recorded at Las Vegas' Studio at the Palms, with additional production and mixing at the world-renowned Abbey Road Studios in London. Produced by Grammy and Emmy Award-nominated arranger/composer Rob Mathes, the album found Panic At The Disco embracing a melodic, classic rock-inspired aesthetic while still maintaining the visionary pop modernism that made their 2005 debut A Fever You Can't Sweat Out among the new millennium's most popular and successful releases. Debuting at No. 2 on the on Billboard 200, Pretty. Odd earned a veritable ream of critical acclaim with Spin awarding the set four stars, noting that PATD "have stepped up their songwriting skills to create a dazzling album that is both blindingly bright and optimistically beautiful," while the New York Times called it "A brave change...the magnum opus of a talented band."
Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You
Regular price $36.00 Save $-36.00Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You is a sprawling double-LP exploring the deepest elements and possibilities of Big Thief. To truly dig into all that the music of Adrianne Lenker, Max Oleartchik, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia desired in 2020, the band decided to write and record a rambling account of growth as individuals, musicians, and chosen family over 4 distinct recording sessions. In Upstate New York, Topanga Canyon, The Rocky Mountains, and Tucson, AZ, Big Thief spent 5 months in creation and came out with 45 completed songs. The most resonant of this material was edited down into the 20 tracks that make up DNWMIBIY, a fluid and adventurous listen. The album was produced by drummer James Krivchenia who initially pitched the recording concept for DNWMIBIY back in late 2019 with the goal of encapsulating the many different aspects of Adrianne's songwriting and the band onto a single record.
All four of these sessions, in their varied states of fidelity, style, and mood, when viewed together as one album seem to stand for a more honest, zoomed-out picture of lived experience than would be possible on a traditional, 12 song record. This was exactly what the band hoped would be the outcome of this kind of massive experiment. When Max's mom asked on a phone call what it feels like to be back together with the band playing music for the first time in a year, he described to the best of abilities: "Well it's like, we're a band, we talk, we have different dynamics, we do the breaths, and then we go on stage and suddenly it feels like we are now on a dragon. And we can't really talk because we have to steer this dragon."
The attempt to capture something deeper, wider, and full of mystery, points to the inherent spirit of Big Thief. Traces of this open-hearted, non-dogmatic faith can be felt through previous albums, but here on Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You lives the strongest testament to its existence.

One by One
Regular price $37.00 Save $-37.00One by One is the fourth studio album by alternative rock band Foo Fighters, released on October 22, 2002 by RCA. The album is the first to feature guitarist Chris Shiflett. Production on the album was troubled, with initial recording sessions considered unsatisfying and raising tensions between the band members. They eventually decided to redo the album from scratch during a two-week period at front man Dave Grohl's home studio in Alexandria, Virginia. The songs on the album, which include the successful singles "All My Life" and "Times Like These", have been noted for their introspective lyrics and a heavier and more aggressive sound compared to the band's earlier work, which Grohl said was intended to translate the energy of the Foo Fighters' live performances into a recording. One by One was positively received by critics, winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2004-the second consecutive Grammy Award for Best Rock Album won by the band-and praised for it's sound and production.
